Kabar Gemerlap - On the first day of Jakarta Running Festival (JRF) 2026, an unexpected but measurable improvement in air quality across several Jakarta districts has sparked investigation into the role of weather modification operations (OMC) and coordinated environmental interventions by DKI Jakarta authorities.
Data from the Stasiun Pemantauan Kualitas Udara (SPKU) indicates a notable decline in pollutant concentrations, particularly PM2.5, PM10, and sulfur dioxide (SO2), between 04.00 and 07.00 WIB on October 24, 2026. This follows the OMC conducted by BPBD DKI Jakarta from October 21–23, 2026, which involved the use of sodium chloride (NaCl) seeding over Bogor, Depok, Bekasi, and parts of South Jakarta.
According to Dinas Lingkungan Hidup (DLH) DKI Jakarta, the observed reduction in particulate matter may be linked to wet deposition processes facilitated by rainfall, though further analysis is required to confirm the extent of OMC's impact versus meteorological factors.
“Preliminary SPKU data shows a consistent decline in pollutant concentrations across five Jakarta districts on Saturday morning. However, the exact contribution of OMC versus natural meteorological factors requires further investigation,” stated DLH DKI Jakarta head Dudi Gardesi.
BPBD DKI Jakarta's OMC operations, executed in collaboration with BMKG, aimed to induce rainfall in the region. The operation was deemed partially successful, with rainfall recorded in South Jakarta, East Jakarta, Depok, Bogor, and Tangerang Selatan on October 23, 2026.
“The improved air quality on the first day of JRF 2026 aligns with our goals of ensuring event comfort and environmental sustainability. We maintain close coordination with BMKG to optimize OMC effectiveness,” noted BPBD DKI Jakarta head Marulitua Sijabat.
Complementing OMC efforts, the DKI Jakarta government deployed water mist spraying on key JRF 2026 routes to suppress road dust, with participants reporting noticeable improvements in air comfort.
“The early morning misting and cooler temperatures made running more enjoyable, especially as the event progressed,” said participant Dwi from South Jakarta.
Additional measures included free public transportation for JRF participants and an early MRT operation starting at 03.00 WIB to facilitate access to Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) venue.
Governor Pramono Anung emphasized the festival's international significance, noting participation from over 37,000 runners across 48 countries, including 1,000 international athletes.
“The scale of JRF 2026 underscores Jakarta's potential as a global sports destination. Our environmental and logistical preparations aim to ensure a seamless experience for all participants,” said Anung.
As JRF 2026 progresses, BPBD DKI Jakarta and BMKG continue monitoring weather conditions to maintain event stability and environmental quality.
