Kabar Gemerlap - The 13th-anniversary musical Menanggung Dua Panggung, presented by Galeri Indonesia Kaya, delves into the complex struggle of balancing professional obligations, familial responsibilities, and personal aspirations—a theme that resonates deeply with Indonesia's performing arts community.
This production not only highlights emerging talent but also raises critical questions about the sustainability of artistic careers in a rapidly evolving cultural landscape.
The musical features 15 participants from the Ruang Kreatif Intensif Musikal Budaya program, who underwent rigorous training with West End Stage in London during December 2025. This marks the culmination of an eight-month training program, where 45 participants in the third cohort completed their coursework, with 15 selected for advanced musical training abroad.
Centered around Ranting, a theater actor and family breadwinner, the narrative explores the tension between artistic ambition and economic survival. Ranting's journey as a member of Teater Jalar—where he aspires to become a lead performer—collides with the necessity to work immediately after graduation to support his family, creating a poignant exploration of identity and success.
The 60-minute production, structured as a jukebox musical, weaves original dialogues, music, and choreography. Songs such as Keroncong Kemayoran and Hasrat Menyala underscore the emotional stakes of the protagonist's dilemma.
Program Director Renitasari Adrian emphasized the initiative's role in fostering talent regeneration and ecosystem development, stating,
"Ruang Kreatif Intensif Musikal Budaya is a testament to our commitment to nurturing the next generation of theater artists. Through Menanggung Dua Panggung, participants transition from training to actual artistic creation."
However, investigative scrutiny reveals the program's challenges: while it provides training, the long-term viability of these artists in the Indonesian theater scene remains uncertain. Alumni like Aldafi Adnan (director) and Ayu Gurnitha (choreographer) are now involved in production roles, indicating a shift from training to professional integration.
Participants such as Herve Pierre Sidharta, Abang Jakarta 2026, highlighted the program's transformative impact.
"This journey has taught us to balance artistic dreams with real-world responsibilities. It's a reflection of the struggles many face in the industry," he noted.
Yet, questions linger: How many of these artists will sustain their careers? What systemic support exists beyond training programs? As Menanggung Dua Panggung unfolds, it invites both celebration and critical reflection on Indonesia's artistic ecosystem.
